Ireland became the first country to legalize gay marriage. Yes Equality , the umbrella group that spearheaded the campaign posted “Today, we are more truly a nation of equals. The people of Ireland have exercised their Constitutional right and by direct vote they have said an emphatic ‘Yes’ to Equality. Ireland now joins twenty other countries where same-sex marriage has been made possible. Ireland is the first country in the world to do so by a vote of the people.”
The official results were announced Saturday at a Dublin Castle press conference: Voter turnout in the majority Catholic nation was more than 60% with 1,201,607 voting in favor of the landmark referendum and 734,300 voting against. said Ríona Ní Fhlanghaile, an elections official.
Opposition was largely organized by Catholic groups that focused on a message of protecting the traditional family but Ireland’s citizens voted in a landslide to legalize gay marriage, electoral officials announced Saturday — a stunningly lopsided result that illustrates what Catholic leaders and rights activists alike are calling a “social revolution.”
Yes Equality says however the outcome has no bearing on surrogacy or adoption rights which they will seek to gain approval of next.
